Question about seeking medical assistance for a drug addict?

Question by ally: Question about seeking medical assistance for a drug addict?
My friend, 50, is a recovering alcoholic who is now having problems with pain killers, which are affecting his health. I have no idea where to get him help or what I can do for him. The hospitals have been drug testing him and pretty much showing him the door. He has very little medical insurance, although I know he has it. Neither does he really have a lot of money. What are the options, he desperately needs medical advise regarding the affects of his substance abuse and other medical issues. He has high blood pressure, uclers and congestive heart disease. His doctors now have him on so many pills, from anti-depressents to beta blockers and even aspirin for the ulcers. He is using illegal drugs to control the pain of his ulcers. I consider this his doctor’s problem. Where can I get him better assistance? Any advise would be helpful?

Wow. Yeah, can he get off the pain killers if he’s seriously in pain?? Will his doctor deal with him if he’s abusing pain killers??

I know there are local city and county programs for drug abuse. In California, we have a state agency handling it.
Look in the yellow pages, search the internet for free na meetings, etc.
Call around, ask questions for his problems.
