I’ve been through an “addiction” personally. I used excessive exercise to control my weight when I was in the depths of bulimia.

1. First of all, you’re always sore. You get shin splints and pulled muscles. I wrenched out my lower back doing exercises improperly. But you don’t care. You become a single-minded monster intent on exercising every last calorie off, or to get that endorphin high.

Second, your body starts to revolt. It was made for lots of activity, but not that much! Some people get low blood pressure and pulse. Others get low blood pressure and elevated pulse. I had normal pressure, but my pulse was always elevated. Addicts can get structural abnormalities in their heart and lungs, too, as the organs grow larger to accommodate the excessive exercise.

Third, your digestive tract from the esophagus down might get ticked off at you, partly from the stress of all that exercise, and partly for imbalanced electrolytes. Diarrhea and cramping is a big one, and it’s tough to exercise through because it’s painful and makes you feel dizzy.

2. Fourth, as the addiction grows worse, you become almost like an alcoholic. You avoid friends and family so you have more time to exercise. You get mad when any of them keep you from exercising and you feel depressed when you can do at least weight lifting. I think you get withdrawal-like symptoms too. At least I did. I got the worst cramps in my legs when I was finally forced to cut my exercise down to two hours (when I used to exercise for about six). I worried about DVT.

3. I don’t know if there are any exercise addiction recovery agencies. I would think someone like that would either go into a clinic for recovery from general addictions, or perhaps for eating disorder recovery, since exercise addiction often goes hand in hand with eating disorders, namely bulimia and anorexia nervosa.
